How a purchase starts

Three questions before the price: the property, the title, the notary.

A purchase starts with three questions, not with an advertisement. Which property, in which commune, and who holds the title?

Ownership is transferred before a notary in Algeria. The notary is not a classifieds broker: the notary checks the title and draws up the deed. Before paying anything, ask to see the livret foncier, or to be told why it does not exist yet, and the name of the office that will follow the deed.

The price is written in dinars. In conversation many people say it in centimes: 1,000,000 DA is 100 million centimes. The tool on this site does that conversion. It does not say whether the price is fair.

This note gives neither notary fees, nor a land-registry delay, nor a list of papers. Those points are read on the file, the day it is put together.
